What is History in the Making
History in the Making (HIM) is an innovative after-school program designed to connect children with their communities. Combining history with art, dance and other artistic mediums, HIM exposes students to the rich heritage of the region in a creative and engaging way and thereby encourages the protection of the area’s valuable resources.
History in the Making was started through the ENHC Partnership Grant Program, and has since become a stand-alone program of ENHC.
The History in the Making 2007 Guidelines are available as a .pdf document here.
History in the Making at LynnArts
Since 2001, students in Lynn have explored their city and shared what they learned with the community. Historical research and artwork have allowed the participants to express their hometown pride in gallery showings and original theatre pieces. The Essex National Heritage Commission’s partners in Lynn are LynnArts, Inc., and the Lynn Boys & Girls Club.
History in the Making at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem
With initial funding from an ENHC Partnership Grant, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem has been able to provide History in the Making for the past two years. Meeting once a week for ten weeks, twenty students researched historical sites in Salem, took pictures of those sites, and developed the photographs themselves in the Club’s dark room. This year, the Club will incorporate digital photography with the goal of creating an online gallery.
Making an Impact
ENHC’s History in the Making has affected more than 200 students, giving them a sense of place in their communities. HIM teachers have concluded that connecting students to their communities gives these young people both a new sense of pride and a respect for others.
